For analysis all of Rebellion, I think I should write a thesis, half in jest. so just i'll focus on Akemi Homura. and Let's start with a The Flower, an important scene.
1. The Flower Scene
Akemi Homura, she is really interesting. she is another protagonist of Puella Madoka Magica and she shocked us by becoming a devil in Rebellion. the story goes in the view of her, focuses on her feelings and she is main of rebellion so it could be called Homura's story too.
first of all, the flower scene shows a lot of hints and persuasive of her action.
Homura talks with Madoka and realizes her 'True Heart' that it was a lie that she wanted to sacrifice for magic girls.
at that moment Homura remembers when Madoka said everyone around her is precious.
Homura is sure she is real Kaname Madoka as Madoka doesn't know she is Law of Cycles herself. ( = i means also Madoka's real hearts was true that she doesn't want to lose precious people )
For Humura heart broken, Madoka is the only reason to live. but she couldn't prevent Madoka from becoming a magic girl. and even she is the largest cause Madoka becomes a Law of Cycles by winding causality around her, although Homura didn't intended. furthermore. near the end of episode 12, she said 'this is even worse than death' near the end of episode 12 in other words it means she gave Madoka more worse a fate than death.
2. Confront The Brutal Facts
Afterwards, in the real world, the existence of 'Kaname Madoka' was erased and only Homura only remember her, she began to suspect that she is the only one who could create a Labyrinth and she is convinced soon.
Before The Flower Scene she said she can't forgive someone who avoid from reality that should keep the world Madoka is made. but in the reality the one was herself who made Labyrinth and turned away from real.
She becomes cause Madoka is suffered more than death and although she didn't intended, even she couldn't keep Madoka's will. in the happy world Homura made herself.
She becames cause Madoka is suffered more than death and although she didn't intended, she just enjoyed happy life in the world she made, even she couldn't keep Madoka's will.
3. Self Loatihng
She trusted Tomoe Mami and Sakura Kyoko she believed they will kill her and save Madoka. it show three feelings. expiation, trust in Kyoko and Mami and her wish keeping Madoka's will.
After that Homura's self-punishment appears in earnest. many self-hatred scene of Homura couldn't forgive herself is directed.
As written bellow,
1. A scene, Homura in despair is surrounded by past Homura who were powerless, soon another Homura hit mercilessly desperate Homura.
2. Flashback scene that she had to shot Madoka.
3. A scene point a gun at a her past silhouette who was powerless
4. A scene Madoka's scarred arm soothe Homura who feels guilty, cry and say sorry
5. And like the screenshot, after becoming a witch, she is chained to the guillotine, and believe that Kyoko and Mami will surely punish her.
here, one question arises. she is the one who saw through Cubei's scheme and tried to protect Madoka's will even preparing self-destruction. indeed, does she wanted to get back Madoka just to posses? let's think about this in 7. Your Silver Garden(君の銀の庭) and Her Dark Orb.
4. Her Feelings For Madoka And Situation She Faces
after that, Homura who splitted Madoka from Law Of Cycles and changed the world respected Madoka idea that contradict her values and give back Madoka's ribbon Homura got before becoming Law of Cycles. to her. she has a premonition they can't avoid conflict but show maternal love with saying 'I just want you to be happy'
Just, if we think about 7. Your Silver Garden(君の銀の庭) and Her Dark Orb, to be described later, her situation that have to depend on the existence Madoka is based in the wish too.
and classmates avoid Homura it contrasts TVA episode 1 when they show respect her. and wouldn't the scene Madoka feels strange and almost return to Law Cycles mean Homura's world be incomplete? seemingly it seems like a perfect world which witch is disappeared and Mami with Nagisa, Kyoko and Sayaka and Madoka everyone exists. but in fact imperfect world especially for Homura. I wish its not allusion about bad ending of her who bears many guilty. especially Madoka followes world's order but Homura can interfear with the world in constrast. thus, we can think the possibility of ruin ending which Homura is corrupted, too.
5. Homura's Complicated Feelings
And do you know 'FORT? DA!' game?
Sigmund Freud thought this play as a process of overcoming by symbolizing farewell by symbolizing separation from his mother as a painful experiential play.
'Fort' means 'mother has disappeared' it is fundamental threat and fear situation to living beyond sadness. 'da' is a kind of feelings beyond relief of survival. as a result Fort-Da means a sort of defense mechanism to relieve the shock in the time though practice fear in advance.
Madoka has become only spiritual mainstay for Homura who lost milestone, it is similar to psychological dependence of child to parent and situation Homura is faced too for her.
And in the scene that Homura grabbed Madoka who came for leading her, Homura's eye light looks like a rainbow.
Rainbow means symbol of homosexuality or bisexuality. (or it may be showing just her feelings of chaos.) but it doesn't just mean she is homosexual. it's a kind of 'Eros' at this time, Sayaka asked 'what is that? Desire? Insatiability? No, it's something elese! Akemi Homura, what on earth are you...?' and couldn't define feelings of her
In my opinion, we could be thinkable what Sayaka said confirms to us that Homura's fall is not for her egoism.
"I finally remembered.
All the times i repeated history, got hurt and suffered over and over, all of that was proof of my feelings for Madoka.
So now, even pain is dear to me."
It's one Homura said when she became devil. she mentioned her only milestone left to her is Madoka, after repeated loops in TVA and she has acted only for Madoka, not for herself and she has shown self-loathing towards herself. because of this, we would be thinkable has meaning Homura become she can find self-love only from Madoka and she might say like 'so now, even pain is dear to me' because the pain toward Madoka makes she feels the exist herself.
They means feelings of Homura which were amiration or friendship in the beginning has become something can't undefinable. The 'Love' she said might means inclusive love indefinable(friendship, sexual love, maternal love, self love or Platonic, Agape, Eros, Philia and so on) as mention of Urobuchi and Shinbo
6. Homura Couldn't Forget Her Friends
After Homura becomes devil and changes the world, she pushes a teacup and breaks it when Mami pass by, but leaves black feather for her. Homura's familiars motion Kyoko for an apple, but Homura shakes her head to reject to take it. however soon familiars chase an apple that go with the flow.
Through these short scenes, it seems to mean Homura's self-punishment that had to betray them and mentality she is no longer worthy of remaining their buddy. in other words, Madoka is transcendent being for Homura, but still she could has feelings for others too.
Additionally in the fight Mami, Homura was unable to shoot Mami's Soul Gem instead shot her leg. additionally in the fight Mami, Homura was unable to shoot Mami's Soul Gem instead shot her leg and as written it also adds persuasion that Homura who wearing glasses, before remembers everything made unconscious Labyrinth which spend happy days with 'everyone'
7. Your Silver Garden(君の銀の庭) and Her Dark Orb
The Rebellion Story's ending 'Your Silver Garden' tells Homura's feelings, and in my opinion, Homura who had lost her way and pursued only one goal, despairs in the world that Madoka is erased and no one can't understand the pain homura has had, so refuse to be grown and choose remain as a child and she want to depend on Madoka.
Almost at the the end of the movie of movie, And her spool changed to Dark Orb and it has similar form of the spool.
As I have said above, she loose her meaning of life by a lot of despair loop, became only can find her self-love from Madoka and decisively she after the ending 'Your Sliver Garden' she dances as if playing with Dark Orb. it is reminiscent of Da of Fort-Da. (get spool back = mom comes back ). I think this means survival of Akemi Homura, not just glad.
It means, She seems that she took Madoka but in fact she is subjugated to Kaname Madoka.
As a result, I think her rebellion is based on her wish Madoka to be happy and her struggle with a broken heart to look for self-love which shifted to Madoka and to find meaning she should exist than possessive.
Thus, we can find Akemi Homura is very lonely, sad and round character like other main characters.
8. Another Possibility In Fort-Da
But As mentioned above, Freud thought Ford-Da Game as an adaptation process which child to overcome the fear of losing his mother and another Psychoanalyst, Lacan thought the process by which a child gives up being the object of his mother's desire.
In other words, Homura seems sad character losing the reason of life and bonded by Madoka but through these conflicts wouldn't she find her independence?
Actually Fort-Da game has been emphasized throughout the movie and form of Dark Orb which spool changed shows that one has Important message for her at the end definitely. so I think we could predict about the ending of her by meaning Fort-Da has.
But not only psychoanalytic view but also there are situation, relationship and so on own of movie so it is true difficult to predict only throughout the academic opinion too. Just my personal hope is that Akemi Homura, a lonely and sad character, will be given her own rest afterward, like other main characters who became mature in Rebellion.
9. Epilogue
The next story of rebellion and also last chapter of Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica, Walpurgisnacht:Rising will be shown soon. It's animation is worth being called masterpiece so i hope the last story will be finished perfectly and clearly and wish Homura dose not lost her value of character, complex but pure too.
This concludes the post. thank you for reading and if there is any problem in my writing please tell me. it will be helpful for study English.
